The Nike Air Penny III retro was the third numbered signature shoe that he wore in the NBA not counting the infamous Nike Air Foamposite. Like the Foamposite the Penny III retro featured a Posite upper that had a "liquid" appearance giving the shoe that nickname. The Penny 3 retro came in just six colorways back in the day, that saw the court very few times. In the early part of the 1997-98 season, Penny suffered a career altering knee injury that has been operated on a total of five times to date. Despite being sidelined early on, Lil Penny and fans brought Penny to the All Star Game where many criticized him for coming back too soon to play on the battered knee.
